Let’s Talk About Cowls – Why Do You Need One?
Cowls - why do you need one? It’s a good question and one we often get asked so here’s just a little bit of information about what they are and the importance and value of fitting one to your chimney.
What is a Cowl Cowls are metal ventilators that sit on the top of chimney pots. You don’t have to have one but there are some good reasons why you should.
What does it do They prevent strong winds from driving smoke, that is escaping from the flue, back down into a room and filing it with toxic gases and soot. It also stops birds and small animals from nesting in the chimney. It also reduces rain from coming down the chimney and as the UK seems to have more storms that’s a good thing.
Do they reduce drafts In a word, yes! So your room will be more comfortable and you also won’t have to battle a draft whilst trying to light your fire.
Do birds really nest in chimney’s Yes they do and it’s more common than you think. It’s a huge risk for birds because they can fall out of the nest and into your home and nobody wants a distressed bird flying round their lounge! Having a cowl fitted will stop birds nesting and ensure your chimney remains clear from nests and debris.
When do birds nest Birds usually start building nests between March and late June, it is against the law to remove any type of bird nest if it contains eggs or chicks so if you spot jackdaws or other types of birds, coming in and out of your chimney it is best to have it dealt with immediately or you may have to wait until Autumn. The best time to bird proof your chimney is between September and April. Birds can build very sturdy nests that completely block a chimney.
What can I do if I suspect I have a bird’s nest in my chimney you can call us. Stu is HETAS registered and a Mastersweep registered with NACS. He will always check first to see if you have nesting birds and carries a CCTV camera to facilitate this. If he sees a nest that is in use, he can’t touch it under the Wildlife & Country Act 1981 and will rebook to return as soon as he is legally able to remove it.
If it looks clear he will sweep your chimney, remove any debris and fit a cowl, this will stop birds trying to build a nest.
